I am planning to go to Kuala Lumpur, Malaisia in September, October to give trainings. I have never been there and I wonder what are specific measures to think about with regard to the Travel Security and Risk management?      color:#5E5E5E;mso-ansi-language:EN-GB"">

  • Malaysia by comparison to many other countries is a relatively low risk country. However, no country or city is without issue.

Malaysia is a predominately muslim country and religious practices, if unaccustomed, can impact on more traditional/western business practices. Regular prayers, fasting during Ramadan and other practices impact productivity or need to be considered for training requirements.

Government services in Malaysia are inconsistent and in some locations/times poor. Petty crime is on the increase in Kuala Lumpur (KL) with instances of attacks, car-jacking and the like reported. Key tourist areas are prone to pick pockets and/or scams. Health services are very inconsistent and care should be taken to ensure any existing conditions are not further aggravated and emergency measures are enhanced beyond the low government standard.

Vice/prostitution is wide spread in concentrated tourist/night life areas within the city. Consideration and care needs to be exercised if transiting or visiting these areas too.

Traffic is very bad in parts of the city which can cause delay or push people onto the monorail system. The usual concerns for travel on trains need to be adhered to. Unmetered cabs prowl tourist areas or key business locations seeking fares that can be artificially increased for those not familiar with the practice. Determine the price before committing to the journey or use a cab with a meter. Rain and inclement weather can cause flooding and major traffic congestion also, especially on Thu & Fri end of business day commutes.

The main airport servicing KL is some distance from the city. A fast and reliable train service operates between the airport and city center and is recommended for safe and reliable commute. Taxi drivers tout services upon arrival but road safety and emergency services considered, train is you best option.

Hotels are very open and inviting with some adjoining/containing addition retail and social attractions. Access is very porous but concerns remain around the level of preparedness and response in the event of an emergency such as fire.

The overall standard and application of commercial security measures in Malaysia is poor. Do not expect consistent or high standard service and support from such measures. Your main prevention and deterrence from crimes of opportunity or random acts will by yourself and your actions.

Your visit is likely to be uneventful if simple and practical awareness and response behavior is applied. Consideration should be given to the lack of emergency support in the event of accident.

    I hope this helps
